Dear Colleagues,
Urinary continence represents a critical aspect of human health and is often taken for granted until it is compromised. It involves an intricate interplay among the urinary system, the nervous system, and the musculoskeletal system. Dysfunction in any of these areas can lead to urinary incontinence, a condition that afllicts millions across the globe and significantly impacts quality of life.
Recent research has shed light on the multifaceted nature of urinary continence, revealing that it is more than the absence of leakage and involves the ability to urinate at appropriate times and in socially-acceptable ways. This insight has opened up new avenues for research and treatment of urinary incontinence, and research effort is now directed not only on the physiological mechanisms but also on the psychological and social aspects of incontinence.
In this special issue, we are inviting original research papers that explore various aspects of urinary continence, including but not limited to:
- Physiological Mechanisms of Urinary Continence: Investigating the neuromuscular and anatomical factors that contribute to the maintenance of urinary continence.
- Prevalence and Risk Factors: Examining the incidence of urinary incontinencein different populations and identifying risk factors that may predispose individuals to this condition.
- Diagnosis and Assessment Tools: Developing and validating tools for the accurate diagnosis and assessment of urinary incontinence, including both subjective and objective measures.
- Management Strategies: Exploring both conservative and interventional approaches to managing urinary incontinence, such as pelvic floor muscle training, medication, and surgical interventions.
- Novel Therapies and Technologies: Discussing cutting-edge treatments and technological advancements that show promise in the management of urinary incontinence.
- Cross-Disciplinary Approaches: Encouraging research that bridges disciplines, such as urology, geriatrics, gynecology, neurology, and psychology, to provide a comprehensive understanding of urinary continence.
We look forward to receiving submissions that will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on urinary incontinence and help to improve the quality of life of those affected by this condition. By sharing innovative research and clinical insights, we can move forward to more effective treatments and a better understanding of the complexity of urinary continence.
